Appliance Repair Licensing in Ontario

Appliance Service Technician is a voluntary trade in Ontario regulated under the Building Opportunities in the Skilled Trades Act (BOSTA). Technicians can obtain a Certificate of Qualification (C of Q) through Skilled Trades Ontario after completing an apprenticeship of 6,000 hours (approximately 3 years), including in-school training. Red Seal endorsement is available for interprovincial mobility. While licensing is not legally required to operate, certified technicians have demonstrated competency. Gas appliance work (e.g., gas ranges, gas dryers) requires separate TSSA G2/G3 gas technician certification, which is compulsory.

Ask if they hold a C of Q. For gas appliance work, ask for their TSSA gas technician certificate number.

While not legally required, it is strongly recommended that appliance repairs carry liability insurance. Ask for proof of coverage before hiring.

Typical rates for appliance repairs in Ontario range from $80-$130/hour. The type and brand of appliance, whether parts are readily available or need to be ordered, complexity of the repair, urgency of the call (emergency and weekend rates are 1.5x standard), and whether the technician needs to return for a second visit. Diagnostic fees of $120-$180 are standard and are typically credited toward the repair cost if you proceed. High-end or European brand appliances often cost more to repair due to specialized parts.
