Siding Installation Licensing in Ontario

Siding installation is not a compulsory trade in Ontario. No specific provincial licence is required. However, some municipalities (including Toronto) require a building renovator licence for exterior cladding work. Building permits may be required for re-siding, especially if the existing siding is being removed and replaced rather than covered. WSIB coverage is recommended for contractors working at heights. The Ontario Building Code specifies requirements for moisture barriers, air barriers, and insulation behind siding.

Ask for proof of WSIB coverage and liability insurance. In Toronto, verify they hold a building renovator licence.

Siding material (vinyl, insulated vinyl, fibre cement, engineered wood, aluminum), square footage of exterior walls, number of storeys, removal and disposal of old siding, housewrap and moisture barrier installation, trim and corner work, window and door flashing, soffit and fascia condition, and insulation backing. Labour accounts for 40-60% of the total cost. GTA prices are 15-20% higher than smaller Ontario cities. Energy rebate programs can offset up to $5,000 for insulated siding retrofits.
