Cabinetmaking is a voluntary (non-compulsory) trade in Ontario. No licence is legally required to install or build cabinets. However, the Cabinetmaker apprenticeship is available through Skilled Trades Ontario, requiring 6,000 hours (approximately 3 years) of training. Red Seal endorsement is available. If cabinet installation involves plumbing or electrical modifications, licensed tradespeople are required for those specific tasks. Building permits are generally not needed for cabinet replacement unless structural changes are involved.
