Locksmithing is a voluntary (non-compulsory) trade in Ontario. No provincial licence is legally required to operate as a locksmith. However, an apprenticeship program is available through Skilled Trades Ontario, requiring 6,000 hours (approximately 3 years) of training including at least 480 hours of in-school instruction. A Certificate of Qualification is available but not mandatory. Locksmiths should carry a clean criminal background check, and reputable locksmiths will voluntarily undergo one. Some municipalities may require a business licence.
