The title 'Architect' is protected in Ontario under the Architects Act. Only members of the Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) may use the title or offer architectural services. Licensure requires a professional degree in architecture from an accredited program (typically a Master of Architecture), completion of the Internship in Architecture Program (IAP) with 3,720 hours of documented experience, and passing the Examination for Architects in Canada (ExAC). Architects must maintain their licence through annual renewal and continuing education. Building designers and drafters may prepare drawings for some projects but cannot call themselves architects.

Zoning Approval or Minor Variance

May be required when a project does not comply with current zoning bylaws. The architect can assist with variance applications.

Projects that exceed zoning limits for height, setbacks, lot coverage, or permitted uses

The architect typically coordinates the building permit application process, but the property owner is the legal applicant.

Projects in Conservation Authority regulated areas may also require a separate permit from the Conservation Authority.
