Architecture is a regulated profession in Quebec under the Architects Act and the Professional Code. Only members of the Ordre des architectes du Québec (OAQ) may use the title 'Architect' or offer architectural services. To obtain a permit, candidates must hold an accredited professional degree in architecture (typically a Master of Architecture), complete the Internship in Architecture Program (IAP) or the Broadly Experienced Foreign Architect (BEFA) program, pass the Examination for Architects in Canada (ExAC), and demonstrate appropriate knowledge of French as required by the Charter of the French Language. Canadian architects from other provinces must apply to the OAQ for a professional licence and demonstrate French competency. Building designers and technologists may prepare drawings for some projects but cannot use the title 'architect'.
